Fashion. Fashion. Fashion. Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market are the two centers of discount shopping in Seoul. Picture Canal Street on a Saturday afternoon times a thousand. You can find pretty much anything. Some of the goods being sold are authentic and others not so much. Clothes you didn’t even know existed still are still being sold. Also, anything you want or need can be made on site. Tailors, jewelry makers, pattern makers have open booths waiting for customers to make alterations and entirely new pieces. It’s nuts. Also, goods are transported in and out of the markets via motorcycle messengers who strap bushels of clothes on the backs of their bikes. It’s easy to get lost in the dense alleyways and indoor tunnels of these markets but that’s really what it’s all about. Seeing all the flair.

On Sunday, I went down to 201 Mulberry St. to shoot a Pop-Up Flea curated by Michael Williams of A Coninuous Lean. Two friends of mine both had booths there: Kyle Garner of Sit and Read and Mordechai Rubenstein of Mister Mort. Check out the “O’Snap” Orioles hat and the plaid wool kippahs. The majority of the objects, clothing, and accessories were inspired by an older American aesthetic, including a booth by the J. Crew Men’s Shop. To read more about the flea and to visit more of the sellers online, read THIS ARTICLE by Ami.

Another master of modern photography Irving Penn will be greatly missed. These are two portraits that I continue to revisit. Click HERE to see a selection of his amazing images.

During New York fashion week, one accumulates an army of tote bags. Here are two new totes that I acquired this week. I also know both designers well and proceeded to shoot some still-life.
The Vans X Keren Richter Tote Bag is being released in conjunction with her SS09 sneaker with the same illustration in two color ways. Check it out and more work at her website and the products at Vans.com. Also please check out these photos I shot of Keren in the Vans Store in San Francisco.

Next, we have the Safe tote bag by fashion designer Rebecca Turbow, who on Monday unveiled her new FW09 collection. The event and presentation were a success, and this was the tote complementing the show.

Engineered Garments Grey Herringbone Field Parka (L) and Woolrich Woolen Mills Grey Mountain Parka (R)
VERSUS
I have both these jackets and have examined them with scrutiny. They have been field-tested and approved. They are both well-constructed, aesthetically rigid and clean, and yes, share similar characteristics. Some may say too many, but there are noticeable differences.
The intricate subtleties that men find in clothing are not apparent but really important, especially in those items that serve a utilitarian purpose like warmth, comfort, fit, storage, overall coziness, etc. Take the men’s dress shirt, for instance, an article of clothing which to the untrained eye shares many similar characteristics to others like it. But, the shirt is of the utmost importance. All guys remember the shirt that was their “go-to,” the one that went the extra mile for them. Similarly, as far as jackets are concerned, these two, the Engineered Garments and the Woolrich Woolen Mills, are by far both clear champions. I have to say that they’re both worth it and they are distinctly unique in their own way.
