Reykjavik is kind of like a neighborhood in Brooklyn. You could walk the perimeter of downtown in a few hours. Laugavegur is the main strip where most of the shops, restaurants, and cafes are situated. By complete coincidence, I ended up arriving the night before Icelandic Independence Day or Þjóðhátíðardagurinn where the streets were jammed, and families were out to see the live music and take part in the street carnivals. Notable things here are the antique car show, the street fashion, the cat food, the birds, and the light. The light in Iceland is unlike anywhere I’d ever been.

Anyone set on going to Brimfield in July? Knowing that friends like Kenyan Lewis and Hitoshi from Jantiques in Tokyo regularly attend for the duration of the week makes me think that it’s worth going again. Having Kenyan as a guide at Brimfield makes it a lot easier to put the whole thing into perspective. He has the whole place mapped out in his head and keen eyes for rare unique objects. One thing that is calling me back is that the camera guy is coming back for the July shows. This guy’s got everything. Rare lenses, bodies, filters, lighting kits, Polaroids, etc. Notable items in this set of photographs here are: the fox head-piece, the wooden ghost, the bust form, the full skeleton minus lower jaw, Kenyan in action, the flood light, the Arabic stop sign, and the R L calling out to the Ralph Lauren prop people, and that 8×10 camera which was only $225 although I was told that it did not have a home in my apartment. Anyway, I hope someone got it.

Nights in Osaka are amazing to see. Most young people hang out around Namba. A long arched promenade stretches for multiple city blocks leading up to the Osaka canal where the buildings are lit up in neon. Around Namba, food stalls are hidden away in dark alleys and arcades stay open really late. After the sun goes down, the city really lights up electric and people head out. The “cutie” photo booth to me is a phenomenon. I understand that it’s a way for people to keep memories after a night out together but the “cute” photo booths in the arcades are more like Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator. You have to go through like 30 steps of design and retouching before your photos will print. Nuts. Oh yeah, everyone stares at their cellphones constantly. Worse than here.

Fashion. Fashion. Fashion. Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market are the two centers of discount shopping in Seoul. Picture Canal Street on a Saturday afternoon times a thousand. You can find pretty much anything. Some of the goods being sold are authentic and others not so much. Clothes you didn’t even know existed still are still being sold. Also, anything you want or need can be made on site. Tailors, jewelry makers, pattern makers have open booths waiting for customers to make alterations and entirely new pieces. It’s nuts. Also, goods are transported in and out of the markets via motorcycle messengers who strap bushels of clothes on the backs of their bikes. It’s easy to get lost in the dense alleyways and indoor tunnels of these markets but that’s really what it’s all about. Seeing all the flair.

Harajuku, January 2010
So it’s been awhile since I did an entry. I left New York 18 days ago and I’ve been sleeping with my camera. I think I’m taking like a 1000 images a day. I decided to hold off on posting anything until I can get home and wrap my head around it all. And edit which is really the most important thing. It’s been rad but I’m kinda excited to head back home and get back to work and New York.

Yesterday was awesome; actually, this whole week has been amazing. First, Alexis and Derek of Sleigh Bells came by my studio for a shoot for Nylon. They were rad and had good music which always get things moving. Can’t wait until their record comes out. Some polaroids below.
Then, my good friend Louis Abelman came over to have dinner and we did some portraits. He works at The New York Times and is a documentary filmmaker. We had fried chicken again. This is going to be on the jacket of his first novel. Anyway, the images came out nice and were Interview Magazine / Irving Penn inspired.

On Sunday, I went down to 201 Mulberry St. to shoot a Pop-Up Flea curated by Michael Williams of A Coninuous Lean. Two friends of mine both had booths there: Kyle Garner of Sit and Read and Mordechai Rubenstein of Mister Mort. Check out the “O’Snap” Orioles hat and the plaid wool kippahs. The majority of the objects, clothing, and accessories were inspired by an older American aesthetic, including a booth by the J. Crew Men’s Shop. To read more about the flea and to visit more of the sellers online, read THIS ARTICLE by Ami.
