Upon arriving in Reykjavik, I didn’t really know what to expect other than what a few friends had told me from their previous visits. The plane landed at 12 midnight and the sun was still out, just above the horizon. After getting through customs, I boarded an airport shuttle bus to downtown Reykjavik. The bus driver was blasting Icelandic Black Metal. It was 2am. After checking into the hotel, the sun was fully out and there was no way I was gonna fall asleep so I took a walk and tried to get my bearings. Imagine, daylight for almost 24 hours…….everyday of the summer.

Anyone set on going to Brimfield in July? Knowing that friends like Kenyan Lewis and Hitoshi from Jantiques in Tokyo regularly attend for the duration of the week makes me think that it’s worth going again. Having Kenyan as a guide at Brimfield makes it a lot easier to put the whole thing into perspective. He has the whole place mapped out in his head and keen eyes for rare unique objects. One thing that is calling me back is that the camera guy is coming back for the July shows. This guy’s got everything. Rare lenses, bodies, filters, lighting kits, Polaroids, etc. Notable items in this set of photographs here are: the fox head-piece, the wooden ghost, the bust form, the full skeleton minus lower jaw, Kenyan in action, the flood light, the Arabic stop sign, and the R L calling out to the Ralph Lauren prop people, and that 8×10 camera which was only $225 although I was told that it did not have a home in my apartment. Anyway, I hope someone got it.

More creepiness from thrift stores between Palm Springs and LA. Stops along the way include Beaumont, Redlands, and Sun Valley.

Leaving Palm Springs was tough cause I could have stayed at the Ace for another week, but on the way back to the airport through San Bernardino County we stopped along the way. We walked around the town of Beaumont, California and found some weirdness in the antique stores there which line 6th Street.

While Keren and I visited the desert, we had the pleasure of staying two nights at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs. It’s about an hour away from Joshua Tree and half an hours distance from the Coachella Valley Preserve. I don’t really have to sell anyone on how nice it is to stay there; I think the images kind of speak for themselves. I would definitely recommend it and especially the hotel diner, The King’s Highway. Such a good burger and amazing breakfast and coffee among other things. Stumptown is served. I wanted to eat all my meals there. Also, in the evening, the pool is open late and they screen films and have live music. During our stay, they played Zabriskie Point by Antonioni, perfect selection seeing where we were headed; and a few bands driving to SXSW stopped by on their way to Texas.

Malls. If you live in Seoul, and you’re not at home or at work, you’re in a mall. Pretty much guaranteed. They have everything. And these aren’t like Southern California malls; these are mega malls of insane proportions. Basically at every major subway station in Seoul, a shopping mall awaits you above ground. I got to spend a lot of time in them just going from one part of town to another. And it’s not so much about the shopping experience, but the hanging experience. Couples just stroll and eat and hang out, go to the movies, the arcade. Oh man, the arcade was bananas. I mean I watched a kid hold court on Tekken 6 for like an hour behind a wall of glass from his opponents as to prevent conflict, and this dude play the drum track of Lithium by Nirvana on expert mode. Also, a long suspicion of mine has been confirmed that the KFC colonel has slightly thinner eyes in Asia. Terrible.

Fashion. Fashion. Fashion. Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market are the two centers of discount shopping in Seoul. Picture Canal Street on a Saturday afternoon times a thousand. You can find pretty much anything. Some of the goods being sold are authentic and others not so much. Clothes you didn’t even know existed still are still being sold. Also, anything you want or need can be made on site. Tailors, jewelry makers, pattern makers have open booths waiting for customers to make alterations and entirely new pieces. It’s nuts. Also, goods are transported in and out of the markets via motorcycle messengers who strap bushels of clothes on the backs of their bikes. It’s easy to get lost in the dense alleyways and indoor tunnels of these markets but that’s really what it’s all about. Seeing all the flair.

I just did a shoot tonight inside the World War II aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid. But in eight years of living in New York, I never visited the museum. What a trip. But tonight was a totally different type of visit. I setup a mini-portrait studio inside the hull of the ship. Below is a portrait of my friend Thibault, who I worked with tonight, and an interior shot from inside the belly of the beast. Also, below are some amazing images from the top-level deck of the aircraft carrier shot by my friend Leonard Fong. To learn more about the Intrepid Museum, click HERE.

On Sunday, I went down to 201 Mulberry St. to shoot a Pop-Up Flea curated by Michael Williams of A Coninuous Lean. Two friends of mine both had booths there: Kyle Garner of Sit and Read and Mordechai Rubenstein of Mister Mort. Check out the “O’Snap” Orioles hat and the plaid wool kippahs. The majority of the objects, clothing, and accessories were inspired by an older American aesthetic, including a booth by the J. Crew Men’s Shop. To read more about the flea and to visit more of the sellers online, read THIS ARTICLE by Ami.
