Blanca

Recently I shot Blanca from Ford Models, more images to come.

My friend Louis Abelman (pictured above) works at The New York Times. Last week, he left for Kabul, Afghanistan to research and shoot a potential documentary feature. A few years ago, he travelled to Africa, to the Democratic Republic of Congo to shoot a documentary called LUMO: One Woman’s Struggle to Heal in a Nation Beset by War, which he produced and co-directed.

In Kabul, he’s been shooting with a Canon G9 and has been updating his travel blog, continually adding new photographs and stories about his findings in Afghanistan. I read it to make sure that he’s safe and doing well. Please check it out:

GRACE KELSEY

Saturday, I met up with Evan Rock for some music in the park.
Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice, and Battles were all playing so I figured, sure.
While I’m not one to go to see shows at Central Park Summerstage, it seemed worth it.
My interest in Black Dice started, seeing them perform at Fort Thunder in Providence.
I found out about Battles years ago when the Battles EP-C record was given to me
by a friend because he knew I’d like the cover. He said it reminded
him of a polaroid I took in Mexico near La Fonda in 2000.

Here are the two:

Anyway, B+T is the jam. And here are some photos from the show:

I shot some looks for GAR-DE Spring/Summer 2009.
The women’s and men’s collections look great.

At this year’s event, Nike Sportswear sponsored 88 Boadrum, a 88-minute performance of a composition by Eye from the Boredoms and interpreted by Gang Gang Dance, along with 88 drummers at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn. Having photographed Gang Gang before, I knew it was going to be something special. The setting spoke for itself and the light was incredible. The performance was one of a kind and it was a great opportunity to shoot and experience it. Thanks to Nike P.R. for press access and Tony Plunkett. The images are revealed chronologically as the event unfolded itself in sequence.

Princess Chunk

Last night after going to P.S.1 and the Brooklyn Museum, my friend Sarafina showed me this photo of Princess Chunk. Jesus. This Garfield-like cat weighs a “healthy” 44 pounds and is camped out in New Jersey. The photograph and other googled-images to follow spawned a conversation about the genealogy of Garfield and Jon Arbuckle, Garfield without Garfield, pets, dating, and kids, which led to a collage of ideas about racial purity, dilution, half-Asian children, and chubby cats. I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day sitting in the sand. After leaving Robert Moses, Keren, David Rager, Cheri, and I waited at DiFara’s Pizzeria for two hours. Ridiculous. I’m beat. Good evening from me and Princess Chunk.

repulsion

Today, Repulsion screened at the Museum of Modern Art. When I arrived for a ticket, there was only one remaining. Regardless, I’ve always considered Roman Polanski’s 1965 film, starring Catherine Deneuve,a major visual reference in my ideas on photography and its execution. Most notably, the montage sequence of a distressed Deneuve walking around 1960′s London, as if the camera is mounted to her waist and the lens is directed toward her. The resulting effect is a crop of her upper body that stays fixed in the 16:9 frame, thus the background (the urban landscape) is the only element that shifts. Beyond the psychological disruption in the film and the repetition of visual references like the razor blade and the skinned rabbit, Repulsion is not to be missed if anyone is free on Sunday afternoon at the MoMA.

Letizia Rossi's Birthday Photobooth

Partytime! This saturday Leti had a birthday party.
We set up a photo booth in the tiny basement of Diamond in Greenpoint.
It turned out super clean and Keren provided hand-drawn hearts and diamonds in day-glo pink.
